Aerial coverage is the most requested add-on in wedding videography and one of the most common sources of unusable footage in the edit. A drone card is small, it fills fast, it records in a colour profile that matches nothing else you shot, and it usually reaches the editor as a folder of files named DJI_0001 through DJI_0247 with no indication of which venue, which day, or which moment they belong to.
None of that is a flying problem. It is a preparation and handoff problem, and it is solvable entirely on the ground. This guide covers what to settle before the wedding, what to set on the aircraft, how to keep the aerials in the same colour world as your main cameras, and exactly what to put in the drone folder so an editor can cut it without a single clarifying email.
Why drone footage causes more edit problems than any other camera
Drone clips fail in the edit for structural reasons, not aesthetic ones. The aircraft is a different sensor, a different colour science, often a different frame rate, and a different operator's set of decisions from the cameras that shot the ceremony. It is also usually the only camera on the job that nobody synchronised to anything.
Four failure modes account for most wasted aerial time:
Each one is cheap to prevent and expensive to fix. Regrading a mismatched aerial after the ground coverage is locked can take longer than the shot lasts on screen, and the fix is never quite invisible. The economics are lopsided in a way that rewards ten minutes of preparation over an hour of repair.
Settle the legal and insurance questions before you quote the couple
Aerial coverage sold to a paying client is a commercial operation, and commercial rules apply regardless of how small the aircraft is. This is the part most videographers get wrong, because consumer marketing around sub-250-gram drones implies a blanket exemption that does not exist for paid work.
In the United States, flying for compensation places you under FAA Part 107, which requires a Remote Pilot Certificate. The FAA's Operations Over People rule, effective 21 April 2021, replaced the previous blanket prohibition with four categories based on aircraft weight, injury potential and safety features. Sustained flight over an open-air assembly of people is permitted only for Category 1, 2 or 4 aircraft, and only when the operation uses standard Remote ID or a broadcast module; a Category 3 aircraft may never be flown over an open-air assembly. The FAA deliberately declined to define "open-air assembly" by headcount, so whether a seated outdoor ceremony counts is a fact-specific judgement — make it deliberately, in advance, and not in the air.
Remote ID is the second trap. Any drone that requires registration must comply with Remote ID, and every aircraft flown under Part 107 must be registered irrespective of weight. Compliance can be met with a standard Remote ID aircraft, an add-on broadcast module, or by flying inside an FAA-recognised identification area — the last of which is not a realistic option at a wedding venue. The sub-250-gram exemption videographers quote is an exemption for limited recreational operations; it does not carry over to paid work.
In the European Union, EASA's Open category sorts aircraft by class mark — C0 under 250 g, C1 up to 900 g or an equivalent impact-energy limit, C2 under 4 kg — and by subcategory. A2 operations require the aircraft to be kept at a safe horizontal distance from uninvolved people, with a reduced distance permitted when the aircraft's low-speed mode is active. Assemblies of people may never be overflown anywhere in the Open category. Current flagship folding drones typically carry a C2 mark, which places them in A2 or A3 rather than A1 — worth checking against your own aircraft's label before you promise close aerials over a crowd.
Venue permission deserves its own line in your contract. Historic properties, national parks, cathedrals and a great many hotel estates prohibit drone flight outright, and the person who tells you so on the wedding morning is rarely the person who could have told you at booking. Get it in writing from whoever actually controls the grounds, and name the restriction in the couple's contract so that a grounded aircraft is a known risk rather than a broken promise.
Build the aerial shot list before the day, not in the air
Battery time is the hard constraint on every wedding drone plan. Manufacturers quote a maximum flight time achieved under favourable conditions at a constant cruising speed, and quote a separate, lower figure for hovering; real coverage with wind, repositioning, framing and cold batteries returns less again. Treat the headline number as a ceiling you will never touch, and plan discrete, purposeful flights rather than continuous coverage.
The practical consequence is that you get a handful of flights across a wedding day, and each one needs a defined job before the props spin. An editor can build a film around six deliberate aerials. Nobody can build one around forty minutes of drifting.
Shoot longer than you think the shot needs
The most common note editors send back about aerials is that the move ends before it can be used. A four-second orbit cannot carry a title, cannot hold under a vow, and cannot cross-dissolve cleanly at either end. Fly every hero move for at least twice its intended screen time, and hold the frame still for two seconds at the start and the end of the move so the editor has clean handles to cut on. Those two static seconds are the cheapest insurance in the whole workflow, and they are the first thing that disappears when a pilot is rushing a battery.
Camera settings that survive the grade
The drone's job in a wedding film is to intercut invisibly with your primary cameras. That is a technical requirement before it is a creative one, and it is decided by four settings.
Colour profile. Record 10-bit log. Current DJI flagships offer D-Log, D-Log M and HLG; D-Log M is the more forgiving of the two log curves and grades comfortably to Rec.709 for a wedding delivery. Standard picture profiles bake in contrast and saturation you cannot undo when the aerial has to match a graded ground sequence.
Codec and bitrate. H.265 at the standard high bitrate is the sensible default for wedding work: it holds up in the grade and keeps card and archive sizes manageable. All-Intra at the top bitrate is genuinely better for heavy manipulation, and genuinely enormous. On the DJI Mavic 4 Pro, all three cameras record 10-bit D-Log, D-Log M and HLG; H.265 standard recording runs at up to 180 Mbps in 10-bit 4:2:0, while H.264 All-Intra reaches up to 1200 Mbps in 10-bit 4:2:2 and is available only on the 512 GB Creator Combo configuration.
Frame rate. Match your delivery timeline. If the film is 24p, shoot the drone at 24p for anything that needs to sit at normal speed, and use a higher rate only where you actively want the shot slowed. The Mavic 4 Pro's main camera records up to 6K/60, and up to 4K/120 for slow motion — useful, but not a default, and expensive in both card space and editorial time when it is left on by accident.
Shutter. Hold roughly a 180-degree shutter angle — a shutter speed near double the frame rate — which on a bright wedding day means ND filters rather than a faster shutter. Aerials shot at a stopped-down fast shutter read stuttery and video-like against ground footage exposed correctly, and no grade fixes the difference.
Keep the drone in the same colour world as your main cameras
An aerial that does not match is worse than no aerial. Editors can hide a slightly soft shot; they cannot hide a shot that changes the film's colour identity for four seconds in the middle of a sequence.
Three habits do most of the work. Lock white balance to the same Kelvin value your A-cam is using rather than leaving auto engaged, so the drone does not drift as it passes over grass, stone and sky within a single move. Shoot a reference frame — the couple, or even your own hand, in the same light as the ground cameras — at the start of the day, so the editor has a known target rather than a guess. And send the conversion LUT you expect to be used, rather than assuming the editor owns it.
DJI publishes free official D-Log M to Rec.709 transcoding LUTs for most of its current cameras through its Download Center. Availability varies between DJI's regional sites, and the newest aircraft are not always listed on every one, so download the file that matches your exact model and include it in the handoff rather than assuming your editor already has it. If you have a house look, state whether the aerials should be converted to Rec.709 first and then graded to match, or graded directly with your show LUT — those two instructions produce visibly different films.

The drone gives you no usable location sound — plan the edit around that
A wedding drone contributes nothing to the soundtrack. Consumer aircraft in DJI's folding line carry no onboard microphone at all; the app's audio-recording function captures the controller's or phone's microphone, or a connected DJI Mic transmitter, and merges that track into the video file when you download it. Either way, what gets recorded is the pilot's surroundings, not the scene a hundred feet below.
That has two consequences for how aerials are prepared. First, aerials cannot be synchronised to the rest of the day by audio waveform, because there is no shared sound to match against. Second, consumer drones do not record timecode — that is a cinema-line feature on aircraft such as DJI's Inspire series — so there is no automatic handle for aligning aerials to the ground cameras either. Drone clips are therefore the ones an editor places by hand, one at a time.
What you can supply instead costs nothing: note the approximate wall-clock time of each flight in your shot log. Knowing that a flight went up at 18:40 puts a clip within a minute of its place on the timeline, which is the difference between a quick placement and a hunt through the ceremony for a matching light level.

There is a creative consequence too. Because aerials carry no sound of their own, they are the shots most likely to sit under music or under a vow voiceover, which raises the bar on their length and stability. A shot that will carry thirty seconds of a vow needs to be thirty seconds of usable, uninterrupted movement — not three eight-second fragments that happen to add up.
Offload drone cards in the same pass as everything else
Drone media is the most frequently orphaned media on a wedding job. The cards are physically smaller, they live in a different bag, and they are offloaded last — which in practice means sometimes not at all.
Drone files are also larger per minute than most videographers expect. At 180 Mbps, a minute of footage is roughly 1.35 GB. At an All-Intra bitrate of 1200 Mbps, the same minute is approximately 9 GB. A single golden-hour flight recorded All-Intra can therefore outweigh an entire ceremony recorded on a ground camera in a compressed codec — which matters for the card in the aircraft, the drive it lands on, and the upload you are about to start.
Fold the drone card into the same offload routine as the camera cards: copy to the working drive, copy to the backup, verify both, and only then consider the card done. Never format a drone card in the field
The temptation is strongest with drones, because cards fill mid-day and a spare is not always in the bag. Carry enough drone cards for the entire day and treat a full card as a full card. A formatted card is the one failure in this whole workflow with no recovery path and no apology that works.
What goes in the drone folder at handoff
An editor opening your project should be able to answer three questions about the aerials without asking you: what is this, when was it shot, and what should it look like. A flat folder of sequentially numbered files answers none of them.
Keep drone media in its own clearly labelled folder rather than merging it into the ground camera folders. The files have different specs and a different grade path, and separating them lets the editor apply a conversion LUT to the whole folder in one operation instead of clip by clip.
Keep the original camera filenames. Renaming drone files breaks the aircraft's own sequence and makes it impossible to correlate a clip with a flight when something needs checking later. Add meaning in the log, not in the filename.
A workable shot log line is one sentence: DJI_0114 — 18:40, golden hour orbit, couple in the field, intended as the opening reveal. Brief the aerials as part of the film, not as a bonus reel
The last mistake is treating aerials as decoration to be sprinkled wherever they fit. Aerials carry structural jobs in a wedding film — they open it, they mark the passage from day to evening, and they close it — and an editor who knows which shot is meant for which job will cut a better film than one choosing from an undifferentiated pile.
Say three things in the brief. Which aerial opens the film. Which aerial closes it. And how much aerial you want overall, because taste varies enormously: a documentary-leaning film might carry two aerials in eight minutes, while a cinematic highlight film might carry six in four. Without that instruction the editor guesses, and the revision round that follows is entirely avoidable.
If the aerials are weak — a grey day, a restricted flight, an aircraft grounded by wind — say so explicitly rather than hoping they get used anyway. An editor told the aerials are thin will build a film that does not need them. An editor left to discover it will build one that does, and then rebuild it.

How much aerial footage does an editor actually need?
Far less than most videographers shoot. Five to eight deliberate shots of 15 to 30 seconds each is ample for a highlight film. What matters is that each one is a complete, stable move with clean handles at both ends, not the total runtime sitting on the card.
