The colour profile row is the one videographers break most often, usually because the B-camera is an older body without the same log profile. If your bodies genuinely cannot match, tell your editor which camera is which before they start, and say which one you consider the reference for skin tone. Timecode: make sync free instead of billable

Hardware timecode is the professional default. Dedicated generators such as the Tentacle Sync E series jam a shared clock into each camera and recorder; the manufacturer specifies the SYNC E mk2's high-precision oscillator at under one frame of drift across 24 hours, which is far longer than any wedding day. Once every device carries the same timecode, both DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Pro can align angles automatically — Resolve's Auto Sync Audio offers an explicit "Based on Timecode" option alongside a "Based on Waveform" option, and Premiere Pro's synchronise dialog lets you pick a timecode or audio sync point. Many editors reach for waveform matching even when timecode exists, because it aligns against the sound itself rather than against a clock that was jammed hours earlier.
If you do not own timecode hardware, the cheap substitute is discipline: leave in-camera audio enabled on every body even when it is unusable creatively, because a bad microphone still produces a waveform an algorithm can match. Jam once, then verify once
Timecode is set-and-forget only if you actually check it. Jam every device in the morning, then photograph the timecode display on each camera. That photo is your evidence later if one body was never jammed — it turns a mystery into a known offset your editor can apply in one step.
Audio: the layer that dictates the story spine
A wedding highlight film is built on speech. Vows and speeches supply the narrative spine, and everything visual is cut to fit that spine. When the audio is unusable, the editor is not making a compromised film — they are making a different, weaker film built on music alone.
Record every important voice on more than one device. The standard configuration is a lavalier on the officiant or groom, a second recorder near the ceremony's sound source, and a feed from the venue's PA when one exists. Redundancy costs almost nothing on the day and saves the entire project when a lav is muffled by a jacket.
32-bit float recorders have changed the risk profile of this considerably. Shoot in scenes, not in shots
The most common structural problem in wedding footage is not bad shots — it is good shots that do not connect. An editor needs a way in and a way out of every moment. A shot that starts mid-action and ends mid-action can only be used in the middle of a sequence, and a timeline full of middles has no shape.
Think in complete scenes: an establishing wide that says where we are, a medium that says who is doing what, and a detail that gives the editor a place to cut. That trio is enough to build a coherent thirty seconds out of any moment, from the getting-ready room to the cake.
Hold longer than feels necessary
Roll for at least five seconds before and after the action you actually want. Handles are what let an editor place a cut where the music says it should go rather than where your finger says it must. A five-second handle costs a few megabytes; its absence costs a compromise on every cut.

Plan the ceremony as a three-camera problem even if you are working alone. One camera should be locked off on a wide that covers the whole altar and never moves — this is your safety angle and your sync anchor. A second should hold a stable medium on the couple. Whatever you carry is then free to roam for reactions, knowing that if a roaming shot fails, the wide still has the moment covered.
Frame with the crop in mind
Vertical deliverables are no longer an unusual request — short-form highlights for Reels and TikTok have become a common line item in premium packages. If a vertical edit is on your deliverables list, leave headroom and keep the couple near the centre third during key moments so a 9:16 crop does not decapitate anyone. Deciding this on the day is free; deciding it in post means either reframing every shot or shooting a second edit from unsuitable material.
Two practical constraints worth confirming with the venue before the ceremony starts: whether you may position a camera behind or beside the officiant, and whether the venue's PA can give you a direct audio feed. Both answers change your coverage plan, and both are much easier to get an hour early than two minutes before the processional.
Speeches, vows and reactions
Speeches are where weddings generate their best and worst material. The best, because unscripted emotion is exactly what a highlight film is built from. The worst, because a speech shot from one static angle with no reactions is fifteen minutes of unusable footage that has to be cut down to twenty seconds with nowhere to hide the joins.
The rule is simple: never cover a speech with a single camera. You need at least one angle on the speaker and one on the people the speech is about. Cutting between them is how an editor removes the flat middle of a story and keeps the punchline — and it is invisible, because the audience accepts a change of angle as a change of moment.
Vows deserve the same treatment with one addition: if the couple has written their vows, ask for a photograph of the page before the ceremony. Media discipline and the hand-off that follows
Card handling is where a good shooting day quietly turns into a bad delivery. The rules are unglamorous and they are the difference between an editor starting work on Monday and an editor waiting for a re-upload on Thursday.
Start with cards fast enough for your codec. The SD Association defines Video Speed Class by guaranteed minimum sequential write speed: V30 guarantees at least 30 MB/s, V60 at least 60 MB/s, and V90 at least 90 MB/s. Match the class to what your camera actually writes, with headroom — a card that is merely adequate is the one that drops a frame during the vows.
That last row causes more real damage than it should. Cameras restart their file numbering, so two cards from two bodies routinely contain files with identical names. Merge them into one folder and your operating system will offer to replace one with the other. Keeping camera folders separate makes that impossible. The wider principle is the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of the footage, on two different types of media, with one of them off-site. Confirm the audio recorder files are present and non-zero in length. Write down anything that went wrong — the camera that lost timecode, the lav that failed at the reception, the moment you did not get. Note the family members who must appear in the film and the ones who must not.
Those notes are worth more to an editor than any amount of additional footage, because they replace guesswork with instruction.
